1990 Canada $20 Aviation - The Avro Lancaster Bomber Sterling Silver Coin

This 1990 Lancaster Bomber $20 coin belongs to the first group of 10 coins released in this series. That group of coins commemorates the first 50 years of powered flight in Canada. Each coin commemorates an aviation hero and his achievements. The coins are sterling silver and have a 24-karat gold-covered cameo portrait of an aviation hero. This coin is the second coin in the series and features the Avro Lancaster bomber.

The Avro Lancaster was an incredibly important component of the Allied attack on Europe as it was used very successfully as a heavy night bomber. After the war this craft was heavily used in the aerial mapping of Canada. The cameo on this coin features Air Commodore John Fauquier, D.S.O.**. He received two major overseas decorations and inducted into the Aviation Hall of Fame.
