The United Nations, in October 1999, declared this year as the International Year of Older Persons. This coin was struck to support Canada's concept of "A Society for All Ages."
The United Nations declared 1999 as the International Year of Older Persons in an effort to increase awareness of the world's aging population and in the process shift in perceptions as well as policies. As a founding UN member-state, Canada came up with a domestic initiative to create "A Society for All Ages." Celebrate this special year with the 1999 International Year of the Older Persons Sterling Silver Dollar Coin. The coin's reverse design is created by Canadian artists Shelagh Armstrong-Hodgson as well as designer Paul Hodgson which depicts an image of two individuals in their golden years. The obverse comes with an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
