Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) was a French painter and one of the leading members of the Impressionist movement.

Born in Limoges, France, Renoir began his artistic career as an apprentice to a porcelain painter in Paris. He later studied painting at the École des Beaux-Arts and worked as a commercial artist and decorator before turning to fine art.

Renoir is best known for his paintings of people, especially women, which often feature a sense of beauty, sensuality, and joy. He was especially skilled at capturing the play of light and color, which gave his paintings a unique and lively quality. Renoir's works also often feature soft, blurred contours and a visible brushstroke, which helped to establish him as a leading figure in the Impressionist movement.

In addition to painting, Renoir was also a prolific sculptor, and he worked in a variety of media, including oil paint, watercolor, pastel, and pencil. His subjects ranged from portraits and nudes to landscapes and scenes of everyday life.

Renoir's artwork was widely exhibited during his lifetime, and he was celebrated as one of the greatest painters of his generation. Today, his paintings are held in many public and private collections around the world, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
