    Letter From Consigner

I am the curator of the Army Museum of South Australia (AMOSA). www.amosa.org.au

We are a regional museum of the Australia Army History Unit. Our museum is operated by a 'not for profit' foundation comprising volunteer members, but also incorporates a small number of Australian Army (Reserve) members, of which I am one. The AMOSA Foundation has authorized me to write to you in order to dispose of a Canada Red Ensign, which may date to around 1870. Please find attached three images of a one sided Canada Red Ensign with a 5 Province Crest, surmounted by the St Edward crown in the style of Queen Victoria..

This ensign has never been an accessioned object for our museum. We have held it for many years but we are unsure of its origin. Here is what we do know:

We have had the flag for over twenty years
Until 2020, the flag was cased in a large gilt frame.
With the flag, inside the frame, was a hand written card recording that the flag had been acquired by "The Club" as part of a patriotic display in 1917.
The wooden staff seen in the images remains attached to the flag.
The flag appears to be made from a heavy corded silk and is in excellent condition with no obvious damage.

What we do not know is whether this flag began life as a commercially produced Red Ensign from the UK, and then had the crest and crown applied in Canada.
We do not know why it was in the Australian State of South Australia prior to 1917.
We do not know what "The Club" referred to on the card from 1917 was, or where it was located.
