J.E.H. MacDonald (1873-1932) was a Canadian artist and one of the founding members of the Group of Seven, a group of Canadian landscape painters who sought to create a distinct national style of art.
MacDonald was born in Durham, England and immigrated to Canada with his family at the age of 14. He studied at the Hamilton Art School and the Central Ontario School of Art and Design (now the Ontario College of Art and Design University) in Toronto, where he later became a teacher.
MacDonald's paintings are known for their strong sense of design, bold color, and expressive brushwork. He often painted landscapes that captured the unique character of the Canadian wilderness, including scenes of the Rocky Mountains, Algoma, and Georgian Bay.
In addition to his painting, MacDonald was also an accomplished commercial artist, working for the design firm Grip Limited in Toronto. He designed many well-known logos and advertisements, including the Canadian Pacific Railway's iconic logo.
MacDonald's work was widely exhibited during his lifetime, and he received many honors and awards for his contributions to Canadian art, including being made a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Today, his paintings are held in many public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
MacDonald's legacy as a member of the Group of Seven continues to inspire and influence Canadian art today, and he is widely regarded as one of Canada's greatest painters.
