Rachel Ruysch (1664-1750) was a Dutch still-life painter known for her intricate and highly detailed flower paintings.

Ruysch was born in The Hague, the Netherlands, into a family of artists. Her father was a prominent scientist and amateur painter, and her mother was a skilled flower painter. Ruysch received her artistic training from her mother and later studied with the still-life painter Willem van Aelst.

Ruysch's paintings are characterized by their meticulous attention to detail and their ability to capture the natural beauty of flowers and other objects. She often arranged flowers in elaborate bouquets, incorporating insects and other small animals into her compositions to add interest and detail.

Ruysch's work was highly sought after during her lifetime, and she enjoyed great success as a painter. She received many commissions from wealthy patrons and European courts, including the courts of Spain and Austria.

Despite the challenges faced by women artists of her time, Ruysch was able to establish a successful career and gain recognition for her work. She was one of the few female artists of the 17th century to achieve such success and is now regarded as one of the greatest still-life painters of all time.

Today, Ruysch's paintings are held in many public and private collections, including the Louvre in Paris and the National Gallery in London. Her legacy continues to inspire and influence artists and art lovers around the world.
