Svend Aage Jensen (1916-1982) was a Danish-Canadian artist and industrial designer known for his contributions to modernist design in Canada.
Jensen was born in Denmark and studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. After graduating, he worked for several years as a designer for the Danish company, Georg Jensen. In 1949, he immigrated to Canada and settled in Toronto, where he established his own design studio.
Jensen's work as an industrial designer was highly influential in Canada's post-war design scene, and he was widely recognized for his contributions to the field. He was a founding member of the Industrial Designers of Canada and a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He worked on a range of projects, including furniture, lighting, and other household objects, and his minimalist, functionalist aesthetic was a hallmark of his designs.
In addition to his work as a designer, Jensen was also an accomplished painter and printmaker. He often incorporated his interest in geometric abstraction into his artwork, creating bold, colorful compositions that reflected his modernist sensibility.
Jensen's work has been exhibited widely in Canada and beyond, and his designs and artwork are held in many public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
Today, Jensen is remembered as one of Canada's most significant designers and artists of the mid-20th century, and his legacy continues to influence the world of design and art in Canada and beyond.
